Munkácsy Mihály Gimnázium (Kaposvár)

Munkácsy Mihály Gimnázium is one of several high schools in the city of Káposvár, Hungary. Munkácsy is the only high school in the city with a bilingual program in English. For at least the last four years CETP has placed an English lektor in this school. In Fall of 2010 it was one of only two schools in southwest Hungary where CETP had teachers. The CETP teacher at this school also works part time with Zrínyi Ílona Elementary School in Kaposvár.

Munkácsy Mihály
He was born in the end of the 19th century in Munkács which now belongs to Ukraine. When he was young his parents died. He moved to his uncle. He learnt to be a shoemaker as an apprentice. Then he met a famous painter. He moved to Budapest and arranged exhibitions.
He became famous when one of his paintings won a competition in Paris. In Paris he met Rippl-Rónai. They had a place to paint together. The most famous paintings are: Yawning Apprentice (Ásító Inas); Christ in front of Pilate (Krisztus Pilátus előtt); Golgotha (Golgota).
That’s why this school’s name is Munkácsy. Since then it has been the best school in Kaposvár.

Education
I think Munkácsy is one of the best schools in Somogy County. We have lots of classes. We have a library where you can borrow books. There are lots of well-educated teachers. There are several different focuses. As an example sport class, informatics class, special English class, French-German class, bilingual class. You can go on study trips. Every year a lector comes from abroad to our school and helps us learn the language. In the 12th class you can graduate in lots of subjects. Let me mention some of these: English, Maths, Geography, Biology, Physics, History and so on. Students who attend bilingual class have to take exams three times a year. It consists of oral and written exams. You have to take final exams if you want to go to university. If you attend this school your university prospects are promising.

Special Classes
Munkácsy Mihály Gimnázium is very lucky in this case. It has got several special classes. For example our class, the bilingual one. This class is full of talented and clever students. If you like English you can go to a special English class which means 5 lessons per week. You can choose a French or a German class. It means 5 lessons per week, too. If you are good at Maths you should go to the Maths-class. And we also have a Biology-Chemistry course as well. If your life is full of sports you should go to the Sport-class. To sum up in this school there are a lot of great opportunities. In my opinion, everybody can choose the best class for his/her knowledge.

Bilingual Class
I would like to introduce to you one of the best classes in Munkácsy. Ten years ago it was only a dream in a few minds but some years ago it became reality. In Semptember the 9th dual-language class started learning here. The education lasts for five years. In the first year they mostly learn English, in 18 lessons a week. It is an elite training which can’t be attended by any person. The students who are not on the level of this class are fired. Even if somebody has threes he can be sent away. But those who can finish this class get an advanced level English language exam. Although there is an extra year, it worth doing it. To sum it up it is difficult but not impossible.

Classrooms
In Munkácsy there are several special classrooms. There is a library, science labs, and information technology labs, a gym and a small gym, geography classrooms, history classrooms and special language classrooms. I think students like gym the best. Munkácsy is a very good school but children like when they don’t have to learn. They can play ballgames or do exercises. In the small gym, you can keep your fit and do exercises which make you stronger. There are good equipments. For example: basketballs, volleyballs, ropes, weights etc. In the Information Technology lab there are computers. In the special language classrooms there are dictionaries and every classroom has a TV. Geography and History classrooms have maps and atlases. And in the chemistry and biology labs there are kinds of liquids and skeletons. It’s a well-equipped school.
- Buffet: The buffet worker(büfésnéni) is very kind. The pizza and the hamburger are very delicious. The food isn’t expensive. There are homemade sandwiches and cocoas from the supermarkets.
- Gym: It is big enough to do exercises, trainings and sports. But it’s small to have 2 or more P.E. lessons at the same time. There is a smaller gym where you can do exercises which make you stronger. There are handball, volleyball and basketball teams. You can find all the equipment you need.
- Classrooms: There are small ones and big ones. We attend a bilingual class so we are usually in a small classroom. Unfortunately the desks are uncomfortable. There are special labs. In the middle of the school there is a stage where you can sit in the breaks and if there is an occasion we use this stage for performances.
- Teachers: Teachers are strict and well-qualified. Most of them are friendly. They have enjoyable lessons.

Study Clubs
In our school there are a lot of study clubs for talented children. They can choose different kind of activities. Firstly, the skilled pupils join to the Art Club with Franky. Secondly, if you are good at acting, you can choose an English Drama Club. They usually go to competitions and they are good at it. Thirdly, if you are interested in newspapers. You can be the journalist of Munkácsy Times. Next, if you can sing well you should choose the quarrel with Mrs.Sótonyi. She is new in our school. But she is very creative. She makes some interesting events. Last but not least, there is a radio club. You can make some music list. We can listen to it every Friday in the long break. To sum up, in our school it is important to make good clubs and make students happier.
Canteen, Büffe, Turtles
The canteen is the center of the school. We can find there Uncle Csaba, who is the chef and other helpers, too. When the lessons finished, you go there but you have to wait in the long queue. The food isn’t very good (but we don't mention it to Uncle Csaba), but you can get a second help after the seventh lessons.
The büfe is near the canteen and opposite the entrance door. There are big choises of bakery products, drinks and chocolates. Büfes neni is very helpful and kind. Everybody likes the büfe because the prices are good. However, we have to wait a lot here, too.
The turtles pool is the most important place in Munkácsy. You mustn’t feed them. There is a small swimmingpool that the turtles like very much. There are a lot of plants that they can eat.There are 10 turtles who have very strong armours and they move very slowly.
Sports
We are going to talk about sports and competitions in Munkacsy. There are several facilities to do sports. We can mention volleyball, football, basketball and gymnastics. The trainer of the volleyball is Mrs. Zita Kutas Simonné who does her best for the team. She can be serious if it’s necessary but she does her job conscientiously. The trainers of the basketball teams are Mr. Adam Fekete and Mr. Maljusin Mihail. There are two teams in the school: the girls’ team and the boys’ team. Mr.Maljusin Mihail deals with the girls and Mr. Adam Fekete with the boys. There is a football team int he school as well. A lot of girls like doing exercises so they do gymnastics in the school trained by Mrs. Katalin Bundics. All of the teams take part in several competitons and they win cups, medals for themselves and the school. Our school is really successful in doing sports and there are sports classes for the sportgirls and boys.
Celebrations
Celebrations are important in our and MMG’s life. You see there are a lot of celebrations in this school. But the most important celebrations are Munkácsy-Night and The Munkácsy Advent. The Munkácsy-Night cultural celebration is also a big event. On this day talented students in the school preform a high quality show. There is another important celebration for students in MMG.It’s the student’s week,. At this week we don’t learn we just have a lot of fun. All the 12 classes try to get as many votes as they can for the final victory on Friday. They also organise silly programs and make ˝interesting˝ video clips. Live shows are also funny. At the last day of the student’s week everyone can do what he/she want. For example you can play football or poker and also guitar hero. Ant this school’s students always commemorate 15th March, 1848 and Revolution of 23th of October, 1956.
